Dr. Ronald D. Burris Named Associate Professor of Church History
The ABSW community is delighted to announce that Dr Ronald D. Burris was recently promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor of Church History by the Board of Trustees at their February 2010 meeting. Dr. Burris has faithfully served on the ABSW faculty since 2007.
“We are grateful for the contributions that Dr. Burris has made to the academic program of ABSW. He is a dedicated teacher, prophetic pastor, and highly respected colleague on the ABSW faculty and within the Graduate Theological Union,” comments Dr. LeAnn Snow Flesher, Academic Dean.
The students like Dr. Burris’ ability to make history relevant for today’s ministry. Burris likes to challenge his students to think critically about how they ‘understand and do’ ministry. “I believe the serious student can leave ABSW with a solid theological education, and practical tools for doing ministry that will serve them a lifetime.” Burris keeps his teaching fresh and relevant through his pastoral work at Temple Baptist Church in Richmond, California and through his involvement in community causes that respond to issues of injustice and intolerance.
Burris received his Ph.D. in church history from the Graduate Theological Union, Master of Arts in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary, and Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of California at Davis. Burris is also an ordained American Baptist pastor. His academic areas of special interest include Tertullian, Cyprian, St. Augustine, history and theology of the first four ecumenical councils, and the history and theology of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement as it relates to the theology of justice and love.
